Amortized Cost of Electricity from Solar Power Stations with Thermal Storage vs. Pulverized Coal Facility with Amine-Scrubbing

چکیده
The goal of this paper is to compare the amortized cost of electricity from two different types of solar thermal energy technologies with the cost of electricity from a coal-fired power plant utilizing newly developed carbon capture (amine-scrubbing) technology. Coal, natural gas, and nuclear fuels are the dominant sources of electrical energy in the United States. Currently, the primary source of electricity in the United States is coal. 1 According to the Energy Information Analysis, 45.9% of electric power in the United States was generated from coal in January 2011. Coal has been widely used for energy generation since the Industrial Revolution of the 1800's, after the invention of the coal-powered steam engine. 2 The infrastructure for generating electricity from coal has existed for much longer than the infrastructure for energy generation through nuclear fissions or natural gas combustion. Coal has been burned for electricity production since the 1880's. By comparison, the first nuclear fission power plant was constructed in 1954. 3 The current quantity of coal reserves is expected to last for 129 years at the current rate of production. 4 The

Cost and performance analysis of an integrated solar combined cycle with two tanks for indirect thermal energy storage
In this paper, the annual and economic performance of an integrated solar combined cycle (ISCC) with indirect energy storage tanks is investigated. The study includes four scenarios, in which the combined cycle performance was studied exclusively in the first scenario. In the second scenario, the integrated solar combined cycle (ISCC) was examined, and the use of supplementary firing instead of...
متن کاملWater use at pulverized coal power plants with postcombustion carbon capture and storage.
Coal-fired power plants account for nearly 50% of U.S. electricity supply and about a third of U.S. emissions of CO(2), the major greenhouse gas (GHG) associated with global climate change. Thermal power plants also account for 39% of all freshwater withdrawals in the U.S. To reduce GHG emissions from coal-fired plants, postcombustion carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems are receiving consi...
متن کاملTechno-Economic Analysis of Solar Tower Aided Coal-Fired Power Generation System
In this paper, we conduct a techno-economic analysis of a 1000 MWe solar tower aided coal-fired power generation system for the whole life cycle. Firstly, the power output (from coal and solar thermal energy) under variable direct normal irradiance and grid demand are studied. Secondly, a financial assessment is performed, including profits and losses of the plant project. Thirdly, sensitivity ...
متن کاملCost analysis of concentrated solar power plant with thermal energy storage system in Bangladesh
Electricity is one of the most vital ingredients of socio-economic development of a developing country like Bangladesh. Sufficient supply of electricity is essential for attracting both domestic and foreign investment. Bangladesh electricity generation is heavily dependent on fossil fuel mostly natural gas. Due to lack of gas supply to the power plants, the Bangladesh government has ordered par...
